Architect for Nokia building: Bligh Voller Nield, James Taylor and Associates. Commercial redevelopment and new 6 storey Nokia building. Site of CSR engineers’ and shipping stores.
CSR’s Harris Street frontage, from the wharf to Bowman Street, was destined for commercial uses. The structure of the northern section, next to The Elizabeth and close to the wharf, was retained, and its rooms refitted for commercial tenants. Sanctuary Sanitarium medical centre restored the wooden beams and added commentary on the building’s heritage.
Working with architects Bligh Voller Nield, James Taylor and Associates designed a new building to replace the Shipping Stores. They collaborated with Nokia electronics, the original anchor tenant, to fit out a purpose-built structure. The building rises from 6 storeys in the east to 7 in the West, and encloses 12,000 square metres. The terracotta texture ‘connects and talks to’ its historic and new brick neighbours.
