Knox on Bowman

Overview

Designed by Tzannes & Associates and completed in 2006, this building commemorates Edward Knox (1820-1901) and his son Edward William Knox (1863-1932), general managers of CSR which they helped create and build into an industrial giant.

In 1843 Edward became manager of the Australasian Sugar Company, which evolved into CSR in 1855. His business skills helped the enterprise through early crises, and it was he who organised the move from Chippendale to Pyrmont.

Edward William spent his working life in CSR where (as General Manager from 1880) he demanded the application of science and technology to the growing and processing of sugar, and the management of the company, which expanded into Queensland and Fiji and diversified into industrial chemicals.

Like its neighbours, Knox on Bowman occupies a site dominated (after 1900) by the huge tanks which stored molasses as part of CSR distilling and industrial chemicals operations.
